In this episode I tell you the strange history of the drug LSD, from it’s origins involving a deadly fungus that may have caused a bizarre dancing plague in 1518, all the way up until the CIA began experimenting with it in their top secret program known as Project MK-Ultra. Did the CIA really murder one of its own scientists? And how does the man’s death tie into a bizarre outbreak of mass hallucinations in a tiny French village.

Hypnotism is a controversial subject that has been around in one form or another since the time of the ancient Egyptians. Under hypnosis, a person becomes susceptible to suggestion. But just how far can you compel a person under hypnosis to go? For centuries, hypnosis has been tied to a number of murders and suspicious deaths. In this episode, we’ll discuss some of these incidents, including one that may involve one of the most famous assassinations in American history.

In 1957, an odd, soft-spoken man named Ed Gein shocked the nation. What they discovered on his remote farm in rural Wisconsin was the stuff of nightmares, and would go on to inspire many modern horror movies, including Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silence of the Lambs. But the true story of Ed Gein, is so much worse.

Hollywood long ago realized that a lonely and isolated cabin in the woods is an ideal place to set a horror movie. But in real life, cabins in the woods have been the locations of some very real murders. Here are two such stories, including the tale of a group of fur trappers who met their bitter end one winter, and the tale of a single mother of five, who left a terrible situation, only to end up in a nightmare beyond imagination.

During World War II, the German Luftwaffe began a massive bombing campaign over London and the surrounding British countryside known as The Blitz. By night, London began turning off all the lights in order to make it more difficult for German bombers to locate targets. But this also allowed a brutal serial killer to begin stalking London’s streets under cover of darkness.

During the early 20th century, America was caught up in a growing spiritualist movement that swept the nation. One hotspot for seances and new religious movements during the 1920s was Detroit. There, a self-styled “Divine Prophet” named Benny Evangelista met a brutal end. He and his entire family were murdered by an unknown assailant wielding an axe.  Here the true story of this bizarre unsolved murder, as well as the story of a man so determined to prove there was an afterlife, that he set in motion a plan to go there in person.

One of the great myths about serial killers perpetuated by books and the movies is that they’re all criminal geniuses like Hannibal Lecter. In truth, the criminal mastermind is extremely rare. Back in the late 19th century there lived a serial murderer named Edward Rulloff, who was considered so brilliant by academics of the era that his brain was studied and put on display for many decades after. Rolloff is almost forgotten to history today, but back in the day he was considered one of the greatest criminal masterminds of his era.

We’ve all heard the story about how John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theater. But did you ever hear the story about the men who drove a mummy around the U.S. claiming it was Booth? Or the one about the gang of criminals who tried to steal Lincoln’s corpse? Or how about the Army major who was in Lincoln’s box that night who later went insane and tried to murder his entire family? These are strange but true stories your history teacher forgot to tell you.

H.H. Holmes was the alias of one of America’s first serial killers. In Chicago in the late 1800s, he built an enormous “murder castle” where he may have killed as many as 200 people.

On April 7, 1994, FedEx Flight 705 took off on a routine flight from Memphis to San Jose. What happened next was anything but routine though. A rogue FedEx employee attempted to seize control of the aircraft, and this flight turned into one of the most harrowing and violent skyjackings in history. This is the amazing true story.

It’s bizarre enough when a single serial killer is terrorizing the community. But an entire family of serial killers is almost unheard of. In 1843, in rural Kansas a family of serial killers known as The Bloody Benders cut a deadly swath across the prairie.

On the night of March 19, 1919, all the dance halls and bars and nearly every home in the city of New Orleans was blasting jazz all through the night. But this wasn’t any ordinary night of reverie in the Big Easy, for this city-wide concert was meant for an audience of one, an axe-wielding maniac who purported to be a creature straight out of hell.
